Weekend in Review

What a beautiful day for racing!  Once again, thanks to Skip and Lois Matczak and the Seals-It racing team, I ventured on another racing trip that will not be forgotten.  Besides long airport delays thanks to US AIR, the trip was one I'd recommend to any race fan.  I arrived in Indianapolis at 4:00 AM Friday morning, after my anticipated arrival was at 9PM.  The weather and company the next few days made up for this inconvenience. Not only was the weather comfortable, but the track itself was welcoming as well.  After we arrived, we were greeted by officials and some of the nicest people you'll find in racing.  The track was well maintained as to provide the race fans with a dust free and exciting performance by the race teams.

The cars were all impressive during their time trials, and the pits were full.  The race was almost a green to checker finish, except for a red flag on lap 5, which brought the field in to refuel.  Hewitt was the race victor, but there were quite a few position changes within the top four throughout the race.  I happened to be at the race with the Seals-It  #99 driven by John Heydenreich who started 17th and finished 8th, putting him in the top 5 for the series championship.

The Springfield race was held during their annual State Fair, which kept the excitement going all night long.  After the races were finished, race fans, and racers alike were strolling the fairgrounds for greasy food, candy apples, and of course amusement park rides and games.  The band Def Leppard also performed in concert that night, and thanks to some of the band members, eight of us were given track tickets to view the performance later that evening.  I must say that I am more of a race fan than a Def Leppard fan, so I'll spare the concert critique and leave that for a professional.  They did put on a spectacular show, and I even knew most of the songs.  :)  (Being a Country fan, I was surprised.) I remember listening to them in High School.  Listening to all of their songs brought back many memories.  Thanks to everyone for making this a wonderful trip, and hopefully I'll be at a Silver Bullet series race again soon.

UPDATE:  Believe it or not, I ended up at the Def Leppard concert once again, this time at the NY State Fair.  I mentioned that the Illinois concert brought back memories of High School.  Well, a friend of mine from H.S. (Tuzzy) had tickets for the show and brought myself, Mara, and Jim to see these guys in action Syracuse style.  The crowd was wild, and the show went above and beyond the Springfiled one.  (Maybe it was because I could actually see the stage.)  My favorite songs once again were "Pour Some Sugar on Me" (I picture my little sister at the age of 6 singing this in the backseat of the car), and "Two Steps Behind."  They played all the favorites.  At the last concert I had a hard time standing on my toes in an attempt to see the action, but here I found my friends once again, and David and Marvin let me and Tuzzy watch from the lighting and sound booth.  What an experience!  On behalf of my friends and I, thank you so much for the back stage passes and for the once in a lifetime experience of watching from the control booth.  I can't believe how much work it is to create all of the amazing effects that are produced back stage.  These guys work awful hard, and all for the enjoyment of the fans.  I wanted to say thank you before we left, but it was midnight and I was about to be turned into a pumpkin.  (My friends and I were really hungry too.)  So Dave and Marvin, thanks once again.  Hopefully I'll catch you guys at a later time in order to thank you in person.  Till then, enjoy the tour, and race fans, you've gotta see one of their shows.  It was amazing!
